Dec 24, 2018
WWMT/File)COLDWATER, Mich. — Sentenced for their roles in the destruction of tombstones and memorials at the Oak Grove North Cemetery in March 2018, three young men must share the burden of court-ordered $54,395 in restitution. They will share the cost equally. The money will go toward the damage costs of the cemetery headstones that were knocked over and destroyed. The three were sentenced Monday, Nov. 26, 2018, in Branch County Circuit Court. All three entered plea agreements in the case in October.William Vanness, 19, pleaded no contest plea to malicious destruction of tombstones over $20,000. Rather than an admission of guilt, a no contest plea says the defendant will not dispute the charges. The no contest plea is treated as a conviction. In exchange for the plea, all other charges against Vanness were dismissed. He was sentenced Monday to 11 months in jail, and given credit for 222 days served. He will be on probation for three years.Christopher Palmerton Jr., 20, also entered a no-contest plea, to an amended charge of malicious destruction of tombstones between $1,000 and $20,000. Palmerton was given a six-month jail sentence with all time over three months being suspended.Jonathon Siler, 19, entered a guilty plea for malicious destruction of property between $1,000 and $20,000. Siler was given credit for 209 days served, which was equal to the time he was sentenced. Siler will have two years of probation and was released to Twin County Probation Center in Three Rivers, Michigan.Read more:...
